DEBBIE GIBSON’S SONG “RISE” FROM THE DOCUMENTARY FILM “3 BILLION AND COUNTING” CHOSEN FOR THE 2011 ACADEMY AWARDS’ SONG NOMINATION SHORTLIST

New York, NY—Debbie Gibson’s song Rise, has been picked as one of the top songs for this year’s 2011 Academy Awards’ nomination shortlist for “Best Original Song” (nominees to be announced on January 25).  Gibson, singer/songwriter and one of the original “American Idols,” scored the film;  and composed and performed the end title credit song for 3 BILLION AND COUNTING, a documentary film directed and produced by Dr. D. Rutledge Taylor.

In 3 BILLION AND COUNTING, Dr. Rutledge and his team take an in-depth look into a Malaria, a disease that has killed more people than any other..Traveling all over Africa, India and South East Asia, Rutledge’s documentary includes interviews with African, Indian, and U.S. governments, charitable organizations, scientists, politicians, doctors, clinics, victims, and survivors.  The film lays bare the devastating efforts of the 1972 EPA ban of DDT on the Third World, exploring and exposing the politics of domestic and international policies.

Dr. Rutledge asked Gibson to pen the song, which eventually became a labor of love for the artist.  “After seeing a rough cut of the film,” says Gibson, “it deeply resonated with me.”   She adds:  “It’s always been a dream of mine to touch people through the medium of film, so I hope this song and documentary move people to action, to end this ongoing needless suffering.”

Gibson is working on a new album slated for release later this year, and stars in a made-for-television movie titled Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid” which will air on January 29 on the SyFy network.
